Relay for Incarceration

The coolest part of every Relay for Life is of course an amazing jail. Naturally then, the Drug Lords were charged with building one this year. Thanks to Matt Wolf and Papa Wolf (not to be mistaken for Matt himself, who is also a proud Papa Wolf), this awesome pine monstrosity was built and delivered free of charge.

With a little help from some P1s, P2s, and many-a-trip to Home Depot, we now have a fully functional, inescapable, indestructible jail for you to rock out your Relay for Life hours in. Friend ticked you off? Find the deputy, grease the hand a little and straight to the pokey they go. Unhappy with a professor? You’re on your own for that one. I’m not throwing any of the people who grade me into jail.

Check out pictures below for the painting. We’re proud of this one and thanks to all those who came out and helped!

Penny Wars - The Results Edition

The results are in for the much-anticipated Penny Wars. Before I reveal the winner, here's a picture of the jars prior to the counting:
[P1, P2, and P3 Jars]

Based on the height of the jars alone, you may notice a couple things
  • The P1 and P2 jars are nearly equal in height
  • The P2 jar has a lot of bills on top
  • Tiffany Pfundt's jar is the highest and has even more bills (due to the P2's scrambling on the last day to level out the P3's)
From this angle, you can see a nice hefty, rolled up wad of bills in Tiffany's jar:

COUNTING
Counting the coins is no easy task, and thankfully, we have a TCF Bank nearby with a coin counter. Just dump the coins in and wait, right? Oops! We have to remove the bills first... Great, now what do we do?

[Dominick Rutherford manually taking out the bills one-by-one]

Putting our tuition dollars to good use:
[Eric Zhao and Jenna Bognaski with The Michigan Difference. Rachel Joseph telling a joke.]

But wait, there's more! James McKenzie comes along with his wise P3 knowledge:
[They don't give us Pharm.D.'s for nothing]

THE RESULTS
I know the pharmacy students have already received an email with the results, so I am posting this for the zero people on the world wide web following us on our suspenseful journey. Here is the breakdown of each class:

P1
  • Quarters (qty): 193
  • Dimes: 158
  • Nickels: 120
  • Pennies: 2469
  • Total coins (amt): $94.74
  • Bills (amount): $89.00
  • Total score: 574 points
P2
  • One Dollar Coins (qty): 4
  • Quarters: 336
  • Dimes: 523
  • Nickels: 252
  • Pennies: 1769
  • Total coins (amt): $170.59
  • Bills (amt): $84.00
  • Total score: 8,659 points
P3
  • Quarters: 551
  • Dimes: 485
  • Nickels: 295
  • Pennies: 2225
  • Total coins (amt): $233.25
  • Bills (amt): $133.00
  • Total score: 10,025 points
And the winner of 2010 Penny Wars is..........................Tiffany Pfundt!! And the Class of 2011!! Congratulations!!!! Overall, we raised a mind-blasting total of $804.58 for Relay For Life. Looking forward to the War next year!

-EZ

PS The P1's had the most pennies in their jar, so I'm wondering if they took Penny Wars a little too literally. We'll name it Quarter Wars for them next year, or better yet, Sacagawea Golden Dollar Coin Wars.

Euchre Tournament Results: The Best of The Best of The Best, SIR!

The big day is over and we have found the euchre team that is "The best of the best of the best."

I would first like to say the Phi Delta Chi Euchre tournament raised $100 for Relay for Life! Big ups to Margo "Mar GO BLUE" Cooklin for putting this on. Ten teams showed up to duke it out for the grand prize fuchsia-colored trophies:
[Highly coveted: These are the BOMB DIGGITY]

THE EVENT
Unfortunately, my partner Brad and I did not take these home this year, despite being the top-seeded favorites. I blame the economy. In any case, check out these 8.0-megapixel photos from the event, where the games were intense and the rivalries fierce:

[Not being fierce at all. FIERCE!]

[Dennis fiercely looks on as Fierce Jordan thinks. He does that on occasion]

[Liz and Erin being fierce. Gabrielle smiling.]

THE FINAL TABLE
After some number of hours, the final table consisted of
[Dominick Rutherford/Matt Lewis]
VS.
[Tiffany Pfundt/Frank Bertone]

THE RESULTS
I'm not sure what the score was, but I assume it was 16-14 in double overtime, with the winners being...
[Matt Lewis and Dominick Rutherford]
Wipe those smug smiles off your faces; I'm coming for you next year

And runner-ups...
[Tiffany Pfundt and Frank Bertone]
Second place is the first loser.
Even Margo thinks so.

THE LOSERS' BRACKET = THE REAL WINNERS
"Hey Eric, if you didn't win it, how did you and Brad do?" Allow me to answer that question. We lost to Dominick and Matt in the second round, but came back to WIN THE LOSERS BRACKET:
[Brad Sisson and Eric Zhao and coozies]
The Best of the Best of the Worst

Yeah, I know. Why cover the World Series of Poker when you have tension and excitement like this all day? I'm talking to you, ESPN. Check out the bracket for a play-by-play analysis:

Sidenote: Since Brad won't be around next year, I will be taking applications for my euchre partner next year. Please email ezhao@umich.edu with a cover letter and CV if interested.

Euchre Tournament: Yoo-kur, not ooo-kree

First off, pronunciation of "euchre" for the non-midwesterners (i.e. Californians) out there: yoo-kur. Rhymes with nuker and puker. It's not ooo-kree, ee-yoo-chree, or ee-yook. (\'yü-kər\) if you want to be all techniboring.

Second off, PDC will be hosting it's second Euchre Tournament tomorrow, March 23rd, with all proceeds going towards Relay For Life. We have pretty sexy prizes for the winners and runner-ups: trophies, gift cards, travel mugs, coozies, and window clings. See the flyer and sign up your team NOW!

Third off, here are the Ten Commandments of Euchre by noted euchre master Harvey Lapp

  1. Thou shalt not pass a biddable hand.
  2. Thou shalt counteth upon thy partner for one trick.
  3. Thou shalt not trumpeth thy partner's ace.
  4. Thou shalt trumpeth thy partner's king.
  5. Thou shalt leadeth trump to thy partner's order.
  6. Thou shalt not leadeth trump to thine opponent's order.
  7. When thou hath ordered trump, leadeth thy right bower to smite thy foes.
  8. Ordereth not the right bower unto thy partner's hand unless thou canst go alone.
  9. Goeth alone whenever thou canst, unless thy team hath eight or nine points.
  10. Thou shalt not complaineth about the cards the Lord thy Euchre God hath bestowed upon you.

Source (<-- Dr. Berardi would be so proud)
Just FYI, everyone is playing for second place, since my partner Brad and I will be taking the crown again.

Penny for your thoughts?

Ladies and gents, we are midway through penny wars (ending March 29th), and I have some pretty pics on our progress. Again, the rules are coins are positive and paper is negative.

THE CHEMICAL WASTE JARS:

It's the P1's vs. the P2's vs. the P3's. Apparently the faculty/staff and P4's have much better things to do than to help find the cure for cancer. On a different note, who put BCE on the P2 jar?? Someone told me it stands for 'Best Class Ever,' but I have no cited sources to back that up. Fairly accurate though if I do say so myself.

THE CHEMICAL WASTE JARS (ALTERNATIVE VIEW)

As you can see, the P1 jar is pretty full...OF DOLLAR BILLS! Don't be deceived though, because the P2/BCE jar has a Jackson and two Hamilton's wreaking papery havoc on the coins. Those conniving P1's... At this point, I think the P3's are winning, despite their lack of jarry goodness, mainly because the P1's and P2's are both deeeeeeeep in the negatives.

PS Whoever lost a silver ring with diamond-like stones, approximately size 7 and 1/2, please go to the office to claim. The message has been on the whiteboard for weeks, and I need room to play tic-tac-toe
